WINDOWS! The first two delivered were the smaller awning ones destined for the southern side of the building, the first side we wrapped. We have asked for the windows to be delivered slowly as they complete them so that we can work with their delivery and also didn’t have anywhere to store them all safely. Also, the house wrap shouldn’t be left up for too long as it isn’t UV stabilised so working in sections means we can wrap, install windows, batten then clad as we go.
After putting up the house wrap we then cut the wrap where the windows and doors will be, stapling it down and applying sill tape – a flexible membrane that protects the bottom of the window sill should any water somehow get in behind the actually window and then lefts it run down rather than soak into the stud walls. A little step on the internal edge of the sill also helps create a dam to stop any water running inside. It’s super easy to apply and much neater than other flashing methods.
The window then sits on packers at the bottom and packers also put at the sides before screwing it all in to the stud frame. The windows were made with a 10mm allowance on all sides to allow for packing, levelling, the extra waterproof layers and ensure the top of the window doesn’t touch the lintel – windows are not load bearing!
After packing we then either caulked or stuffed in sealing foam to again stop moisture and any draughts that might occur. Only then a final layer of flashing tape is put over the junction to further waterproof! Layers upon layers, upon layers.
For the top flashing Steve measured and drew up what was required to give to the sheet metal roofing place in Hobart. They then bent and folded the pieces cut to sections for each opening, the ends of this flashing need to be fashioned into shape to make a neat end and once fitted.
The two doors for this side arrived shortly after and we got them fitted in much the same way with the exception of the sill tape – instead here a pan is made from a wide stipe of aluminium. It is now hidden behind the bottom batten which pick up the shorter sections of cladding to go under the door and window openings.
Now to crack on with more cladding!
